ARE YOU MAKING COMMON DECORATING MISTAKES?
I see it in almost every house I walk into: things people are doing that aren’t helping their current decorating dilemma. Today I'm sharing 4 of the most common decorating mistakes that I see when walking into client houses. Are you making these mistakes? If so, I’m here to help!
DID YOU KNOW THAT BY HANGING CURTAINS TOO LOW YOU ACTUALLY MAKE YOUR WINDOWS LOOK SMALLER?
Yep & I see it time & time again. Go ahead, check your windows, I’ll wait here. If you are hanging your curtains too low, it’s time to nix this mistake. You want to hang your rod 3-4” from the top of the wall. Just moving them up probably won’t do the trick, you'll more than likely need longer curtains. They need to kiss the floor or be a few inches above the floor. By doing this, you are going to make your windows look bigger, which will make your entire space look bigger.
IS YOUR RUG TOO SMALL FOR YOUR ROOM?
Most rooms I walk into the rug is way too small for the space. My rule of thumb for a rug in the living room is that the front legs of the furniture need to be on it. If you can’t get the front legs of your furniture on your rug without the space looking too crammed together, then it’s probably too small. If you have fallen victim to having too small of a rug, don’t fret. Layering rugs is a solution that I love for these situations! You can find a neutral or jute rug on Wayfair for a decent price & layer it under your current rug. I found a vintage rug that I loved a few years ago, but it was way too small in my space. A jute rug to the rescue and our dilemma was solved!
DO YOU STILL HAVE THE PILLOWS THAT CAME WITH YOUR BIG BOX STORE COUCH?
I see it all the time & my clients are amazed at what a transformation they see when they get rid of the pillows that came with their couch. Unless they are the same neutral fabric, then find a new home for them or buy new covers.
ARE YOU TRYING TO DISPLAY EVERYTHING YOU'VE EVER BOUGHT OR RECEIVED?
Time & time again, I walk into houses where the client thinks they have to display any & everything they’ve ever received as a gift or bought on their own. I get it! We love our purchases and it's hard to not display everything that's special to you. Disney Princess frames, horrible faux flowers, small trinkets from every vacation ever and a shot glass collection in the kitchen (unless you are between the ages of 18 & 21 this is not a design statement you want to make) are all things that can have meaning to you, however, you don’t need to have them displayed all in one place. But mixing these items in with other pieces can make them work in a space.
And let me just say this here & now, just because it’s on sale doesn’t mean you need to buy it for your house. We're all guilty of bargain shopping but cluttering your home with great deals is not the key to great design. You'll actually more money in the long run by doing this.
- Your curtains need to skim or be just above your floor to make your windows look big.
- Make sure your rugs aren't too small for your room!
- Finding new pillows for your couch can make a world of difference.
- Don't display everything you've ever bought or received. Shot glass collections are not kitchen decor.
