Small Touches, Big Improvements - Gallery Walls and Built-ins

Some of the most common decorating details in the home can be the hardest to get right. Take gallery walls and built-ins for example -- when done right, they look effortlessly put together but the actual putting them together takes a lot of trial, error, taking it all down, and starting all over. We at SFD love doing smaller projects like gallery walls and built-ins for clients because they are usually the final touches to a home that help the space feel completed. Here are a couple small projects we completed this past week that we think turned out great!

Mud Room Spruce Up

Sometimes I get in a creative momentum and just can stop myself! Our home's mudroom found itself in the path of my renovation tornado this time around. The SFD has had so many fun renovation and add-on projects lately that I thought I'd take on one for myself... but a much smaller job, of course. This small project of redoing the mudroom consisted of tearing down the old built-ins and creating my own, and obviously adding some good ol' shiplap! Take a look at the transformation below!

Simple Home Update | Magnolia, TX

The Metz family might be one of my most favorite families to have worked with thus far.  A year before SFD was born, Jenny came to our home in Houston & kept telling me she wanted me to come decorate her home.  I laughed.  Life was crazy with a 3 year old and newborn & who was I to tell her how to decorate her home? I was just a stay at home mom.  Once we moved closer to this sweet family, I offered my services to her to test the waters of building a business and to start my portfolio.

They bought their home from her in laws, and it had just been renovated.  They moved in with all of their furniture from their old home & made it work the best they could.  Eighteen months after living in it, they decided it was time to make this house their home.  They wanted to brighten up the space, add a few farmhouse touches & put their personality in it.

The unique piece we brought into the space took months to gather.  We shopped online,  at flea markets, local antique stores, and brought in some things they already had. I feel like we truly captured the personality of this fun family in these spaces.  Thank you so much Jenny & Mike for trusting me in designing your home.  It was such an honor to work for y'all & the friendship that developed was just the icing on the cake!

Home Office Tour

Our home office was probably one of the funnest rooms to remodel because part of it was a huge surprise for my husband. During the renovation we celebrated his 30th birthday & our 5th anniversary.  I knew I wanted this space to be totally for him. We got rid of the desk in the nook & put in a gun safe.  My husband is an avid hunter with a huge gun collection.  I thought it would be so cool to really show off his safe in the office.  We painted the entire room & planked the wall where the gun safe was installed with old barn wood that my contractor had.  A new light fixture, rug, furniture & of course, his deer to finish off this manly space. My contractor & I were able to keep the surprise under wraps until the Mr. & I had our date night & we just happened to swing by to see the progress on the house.  He was in love!

SFD Home Remodel | Part II | Tomball, TX

We are back sharing more of our home renovations tour here on the blog! This week we are looking at our family room.  We absolutely love this room, both before we bought the house and even more now after the renovations.   We spend so much time here -- watching our favorite TV shows, playing games, coloring with the kids, hosting Bible studies, & just chatting with friends.

When we bought the house, as you can see, it had a really yellow feel to it.  The walls and ceiling were a beige, as was the tile & the stone on the fireplace.  I really wanted to lighten up this room, like we did the rest of the house.  We painted walls, ceilings & trim.  We carried the hardwoods throughout this room. We also didn't like that the TV built ins were on an angle, so we had our carpenter straighten that out for us.  And then we added in our own touches to make it our space.

This space turned out even better than I had imagined it in my head!  It's a space where I hope that people come & immediately feel at home.  A place where people can put their feet on the table & not worry that they will mess up something. A place for sharing life, good conversations, laughter & tears, because we really believe that God created homes to be shared.
